What is Reiki?
Reiki is a spiritual healing technique and form of alternative medicine that originated in Japan. It involves the practitioner lightly touching or hovering their hands above the patient's body to balance the body's energies and promote healing. The term "Reiki" comes from the Japanese words "Rei" (universal) and "Ki" (life energy).
History of Reiki
Reiki was developed by Dr. Mikao Usui in the early 20th century. Born in 1865, Dr. Usui was a Buddhist monk with a deep interest in medicine, psychology, and theology. His quest for a healing method that was not tied to any specific religion led him to a spiritual awakening on Mount Kurama in 1922. During a 21-day meditation, fasting, and prayer retreat, he experienced a revelation that enabled him to develop the Reiki healing system.
Dr. Usui established his first Reiki clinic and school in Tokyo in 1922. He trained several Reiki Masters, including Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, who further refined the practice. One of Dr. Hayashi's students, Hawayo Takata, brought Reiki to the Western world, ensuring its global spread and continued practice.
Today, Reiki is used worldwide as a complementary therapy in various settings, including hospitals and wellness centers, to promote physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
There are now over 140 different types of reiki based on Usui sensei's system and many more that are not that are practiced globally.
As at June2026 Reiki is gaining in popularity and recognition for its potential benefits. One example of this transition to mainstream is the fact that it is now mentioned on the UK cancer research website as potentially beneficial. This is obviously a positive step in the promotion of energy healing and long may that continue.

Waine was attuned to practice reiki in 2023 and now practices based on the original teachings of Usui sensei. He practices Active Reiki meaning attention given directly to the area of the body requiring attention to help improve outcomes. He has however also found great success with distance healing regardless of location as will be seen by some of the referrals detailed on the testimonials page. Waine was honoured with the completion of Reiki master training as at June 2026. Waine’s knowledge and approach to personal training with regard to the importance of quality of function and form over quantity adds a welcome holistic approach to the reiki practice alongside some high level nutritional advice gained from studying a Naturopathic nutritional course.
